There are 9 different styles of yoga at the USC. You can follow 9 week courses at USC Body & Mind in Amsterdam East (Oost); from yoga intro courses to advanced ashtanga courses. Our yoga studio is the perfect place to chill out after your work or study.

Yoga in summertime

In August you’ll find 3 intensive courses at USC Body & Mind: courses of 6 classes, twice a week.

  • Critical alignment yoga: starting 13 August. 6 classes on Monday and Wednesday 17.30 – 19.00. By Yvonne Teuben
  • Yin yang yoga, starting 21 August. 6 classes on Tuesday & Thursday 09.30 – 11.00. By Hannah Stork.

Yoga courses: how does it work?

  • We offer 9 forms of yoga. All yoga courses are 9 classes and they start 4 times a year.
  • Subscribe? Check all info under the tab subscribe! :-)
  • During the course you can join the meditation classes at USC Body & Mind for free.

Which yoga course suits you?

  • Read below: all our 9 yoga forms explained. In which way do the differ? How Physical or Mental are they? What Pace can you expect?
  • No experience? You could consider doing the intro course.
  • No level in the course title? Then anyone can join the course!
  • You can participate in level II, after following level I, or after consulting with the instructor.

We also offer yoga in our location ClubWest in Amsterdam West. We offer yoga at ClubWest in the form of memberships with which you can follow all the yoga classes. Check it out!

Yoga basic in the fitness programme

Do you train at ASC, Universum or Amstelcampus? Then your yoga option is to follow the yoga basic classes which you can do with a regular (group) fitness membership!

Intro course yoga

In 9 weeks you’ll get a taste of all forms of yoga and other disciplines in USC Body & Mind as Tai chi and Chi kung. And a lot of our instructors. An ideal start of your USC yoga experience.

Critical alignment yoga

Critical alignment is a modern method, developed by Gert van Leeuwen. With the help of several ‘tools’ we help you align your body. Joints and vertebrae become more mobile, muscles more powerful, the mind more free.

Yvonne Teuben
had 16 jaar geleden zeer ernstige RSI klachten en kwam toevallig met Critical Alignment Yoga in contact. “Al na drie weken yoga waren mijn klachten zoveel minder geworden dat het als een soort wonder voelde.” Geïntrigeerd door deze yogavorm volgde zij de meerjarige opleiding tot Critical alignment docent bij Gert van Leeuwen om daarna ook de aanvullende therapi- opleiding te doen. Zij werkt voor diverse yogascholen en zorgt ervoor dat ze zelf zeker twee yogalessen in de week volgt.

Loviisa Mellin
beoefent onder andere Astanga Vinyasa yoga en Iyengar yoga. In 2009 kwam ze bij Gert van Leeuwen terecht voor Critical alignment yoga, en ze is nooit meer vertrokken. De driejarige Yoga Lerarenopleiding aan het Critical Alignment Instituut in Amsterdam rondde ze in 2017 af. Naast yogadocent is zij ook filmmaker.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is the basis of all physical forms of yoga.  The postures (asanas) will be experienced one by one, alternating between effort and relaxation. The mental component is as important as the physical posture and breathing. You will learn to do thing with acceptance and patience, without pressure.

USC instructor

Lies Holtrop
has 40 years of yoga and meditation experience. She became teacher in Traditionele Intregrale Yoga of the Devine Life Society. She is also a certified mindfulness trainer and regularly follows yoga and mindfulness trainings. She gives Hatha yoga, Mindfulness yoga and the Mindfulness course at the USC.

Joana Gomes
After years of of practing yoga, Joana deepened her yoga skills at the Yoga Academie Nederland. She regularly follows yoga workshops in and outside of the Netherlands.

Monique Ket
is meer dan tien jaar geleden gestart met yoga. Dit bracht haar zoveel goeds dat zij haar baan als projectmanager in de reclame heeft opgezegd om anderen te helpen ook dit goeds te vinden. Zij volgde de vierjarige Yoga Academie Nederland (YAN). Momenteel volgt zij de opleiding Yoga en Kanker.

Daniel Kemna
werd tot yogadocent opgeleid door David Swensson. Hij heeft een achtergrond in verschillende yogavormen. Bij het USC geeft hij momenteel Vinyasa yoga & Hatha yoga.

Ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga yoga is about discovering and developing your life’s strength (prana), physically, spiritually and emotionally. Ashtanga yoga is an intense form of yoga where asanas (yoga postures) are continously connected in an energetic flow.

Tineke Veenhof
discovered yoga during her studies at the dance academy. She studied yoga at various yoga institutes. She gives Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Slow flow yoga at the USC. Outside the USC she works in dance and theater.

Martine Wieten
followed the yoga teacher training at Delight Yoga in Amsterdam. She regularly follows workhops and trainings, e.g. in Yoga therapy. She gives Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga at the USC.

Deborah Hoeks
Since 2008, Deborah was trained as a teacher in childrens yoga, Power yoga, Hatha yoga, Yin yga and Ashtanga vinyasa yoga. She also works as a massage therapist.

Maximiliaan Cohen
ontdekte met Ashtanga yoga de vorm die helemaal bij hem past. Hij volgde zijn opleiding bij Delight Yoga waar hij nu ook lesgeeft en blijft zich verder ontwikkelen via trainingen en workshops.

Vinyasa flow yoga

Vinyasa flow yoga is a physically challenging form of yoga, in which static body postures are fluently alternated on the rhythm of your respiration. It similar to Ashtanga yoga, but there is less emphasis on the spiritual component and there is no fixed sequence of postures.

Yin yang yoga

In this form of yoga dynamical postures (Yang) are alternated with static postures (Yin). The Yang part of this yoga form focuses on the strength and flexibility of your muscles; the Yin part more on the connective tissue of joints and your organs.

Luzmar Izebelle
followed a training to become a yoga teacher in 2013 at the Nieuwe Yoga School of Johan Noorloos. She teachers Yin yang, Vinyasa, Basic yoga, Pilates and several dance forms at the USC. She also works as a weight consultant and lifestyle coach.

Hannah Stork
beoefent sinds vele jaren verschillende soorten yoga en heeft haar opleiding tot vinyasa yogadocent in 2013 gevolgd bij Yoga Tree in de VS. Daarna heeft zij zich verdiept in Yin yoga tijdens een teacher training met Anat Geiger in Amsterdam. Sinsdien geeft ze met veel plezier yin yang lessen, o.a. bij het USC.

Yin yoga

Yin yoga is the counterpart of Asthanga and Vinyasa yoga. With Yin yoga everything happens slowly and calmly, with time for your body and you feeling ‘in the moment’. Most postures are in seated or lying position, and will be held for 3 to 5 minutes. This affects your tissue, the more rigid area of your muscles and tendons around your joints.

Barbara Falorni
followed the Yin yoga teacher training at Yagoy Amsterdam, after finishing her training in childrens yoga. She also works as an holistic masseuse.

Raja yoga

Raja yoga

Bij Raja oftewel Koninklijke yoga staat zelfontwikkeling centraal. De lessen bestaan uit fysieke houdingen, concentratie oefeningen en praktische handvatten uit de yogafilosofie, die je in het dagelijks leven kunt toepassen. Zo train je lichaam en geest tegelijk!

Anna de Waard
volgt sinds 2012 de yoga docentenopleiding aan het Raja Yoga Instituut. Vanuit de basis van Hatha yoga geeft zij met groot enthousiasme verdieping aan de hogere stappen van Raja yoga.

Mindful yoga

This yoga class can be found under ‘Mindfulness‘.

If you are only interested in this class, you can buy a mindful yoga membership. With this membership you can take part in the mindful yoga class in ClubWest and in USC Body & Mind.

USC instructors

Lies Holtrop
has over 40 years of yoga and meditation experience. In 2006 she followed a 4-year course in Traditionele Intregrale Yoga at Devine Life Society (in Bussum). She is also a certified mindfulnesstrainer MBSR and updates her knowledge and experience regularly in yoga and mindfulness courses. At the USC she gives hatha yoga, mindful yoga class and the mindfulness course. Lies is certified member (cat. 1) of the VMBN.

Lot Halsema
has over 10 years yoga and meditation experience. Since 2013 she is a yoga instructor after completing a 3 years course in transformative yoga. Besides this she is a certified mindfulness trainer MBSR. At the USC she is the mindful yoga instructor.
